Guide for businesses

Product exchange deal with a content creator.

A product exchange sounds simple: the business gives something, the creator makes content. The problems start when nobody states the value, how much content is expected, and what the business may do with the content afterwards.

Het korte antwoord.

A product exchange deal with a content creator is a collaboration where the creator receives a product, service, dinner, stay, treatment or experience instead of, or alongside, cash. It only works when value, deliverables, timing, usage rights and advertising disclosure are agreed before the creator starts. For Belgian local businesses, these deals work best with nearby creators who can visit the location and speak to a regional audience.

What is a product exchange deal?

In a product exchange deal, the creator is paid partly or fully in non-cash value. That can be a dinner, treatment, hotel stay, product, workshop or event access. Sometimes the deal also includes a cash fee.

For a local business, this can make sense because the internal cost is often lower than the public value. For the creator, it only makes sense when that value matches the work being requested.

The key mistake is calling it free content. It is a commercial agreement. Both sides need to know what they give and receive.

When does it work well?

Product exchange is not the right format for every offer. These are the cases where it usually fits.

How to set it up.

Make the agreement before the creator visits. Fixing it afterwards costs more time.

  1. 01

    State the real value.

Do not write “free dinner” only. Add the public value, for example dinner for two worth 120 euro.

  2. 02

    Match value to work.

One story, one Reel and three edited photos are different assignments. List them separately.

  3. 03

    Set timing.

Define the visit, preview, publication date and feedback window.

  4. 04

    Define usage rights.

Reposting on Instagram is not the same as using content in ads, newsletters, website pages or menus.

  5. 05

    Allow counter-offers.

A good creator may explain that the requested content is worth more than the offer. That is easier when the conversation stays connected to the assignment.

What belongs in the brief?

  • Value.

Product, service or experience with public value and restrictions.

  • Deliverables.

Number of Reels, posts, stories, photos, raw files or variants.

  • Deadline.

When content must be delivered and when publication is expected.

  • Usage.

Organic reposting, website use, ads, duration, region and exclusivity.

  • Disclosure.

If the creator publishes, the collaboration must be recognisable as advertising.

  • Contact person.

Who receives the creator, gives feedback and approves the content.

Advertising and tax rules in Belgium.

When a creator receives a product, dinner or treatment in return for content, that is advertising. The Belgian FPS Economy says advertising must be clearly recognisable, using words such as reclame, publiciteit or advertentie in Dutch content.

A product exchange can also have tax value for the creator. For businesses, that mainly means the value and agreement should be saved properly.

Kollaborate does not replace accounting advice, but it moves the agreement to the start: compensation, deliverables, timing and chat stay connected to the same offer.
